NFT Hydroponics Kit | NFT Hydroponic System | Nutrient Film Hydroponic System

How nutrient film technique works, and which kit to pick

An NFT kit is a hydroponic system built around one idea: a shallow stream of nutrient solution running continuously along the bottom of a closed channel, past bare roots, and back to a tank to be pumped round again.

The word that matters is film. The channel is not full. The roots sit partly in a thin flow of solution and partly in the humid air above it, which is how they get water, nutrients and oxygen at the same time. A root sitting in a full, still tank drowns; a root in a moving film does not.

Why there is no growing medium in the channel

Because the flow does the work, an NFT channel does not need to be packed with anything. That keeps the system light, keeps it clean and makes it easy to look at a root and see how the plant is really doing.

Seeds are still started elsewhere, usually in a sponge or plug, and the seedling moves across once it has a root worth calling a root.

What you get and what you supply

Both of our NFT kits arrive as the growing part: the gullies, the connectors that join them, the grow pots and a water pump.

You supply the reservoir, the nutrient solution, the growing medium and the seeds. The reservoir is worth choosing rather than grabbing: opaque, with a lid. Light on nutrient water grows algae, and algae is the single most common reason a first system disappoints someone. The channels are already closed for exactly that reason.

The one real weakness of NFT

It depends on the pump. Stop the flow and the channel drains, and the roots have only what is left in the grow pot.

Short power cuts are nothing. A long one in warm weather is worth reacting to. If your supply is unreliable, deep water culture is the method that keeps working when the electricity does not, because the roots are already sitting in the water.

Which kit

The 36 cup kit is one slanted bank of 36 sites, 98 x 108 x 52 cm, at €249. It stands against a wall or on a balcony and the slant means every site sees the same window. This is the sensible first NFT system.

The 108 cup system is three tiers of sites, 140 x 96 x 50 cm, at €399. The tiers are the point: plant them a fortnight apart and you cut continuously instead of facing a glut. You can run one tier to begin with and bring in the others later.

If both sound like more than you need, the 11 cup deep water culture system at €79 is a single aerated tub with nothing flowing. It is the easiest thing here to start on.

What we are not going to tell you

The listing this page replaced said hydroponic crops beat soil grown ones for nutrition and flavour. We have taken that out. Nutrition comes from the variety and the growing conditions, not from the absence of soil, and taste depends on what you grow and when you cut it.

It is also worth saying plainly that hydroponic produce cannot be certified organic in the European Union. Regulation (EU) 2018/848 requires organic crops to be grown in soil.

What NFT genuinely gives you is a crop grown in a space that has no soil, in a season that has no weather, cut minutes before you eat it.

Common questions

Where can I find resources for successful gardening with an NFT Hydroponic System?

Look for online forums, hydroponic gardening books, and the supplier’s website for guides, tutorials, and community advice on maximizing your NFT system's potential.

Can I mix different types of plants in one NFT Hydroponics Kit?

Yes, but ensure they have similar nutrient and light requirements to coexist harmoniously without competing for resources.

How does an NFT Hydroponic System impact the flavor of herbs and greens?

Many gardeners report enhanced flavors and aromas in plants grown hydroponically due to the controlled nutrient and environmental conditions.

What are the differences between NFT and other hydroponic methods?

NFT focuses on a continuous flow of nutrient solution, while other methods may use static water (DWC) or media-based (ebb and flow) approaches.

Can I use tap water in my NFT Hydroponics Kit?

Tap water can be used, but it's recommended to test and adjust its pH and nutrient levels to suit the specific requirements of your plants.

Are there any common problems with Nutrient Film Hydroponic Systems?

Common issues include algae growth, nutrient imbalances, and pump failures, but these can be managed with regular maintenance and monitoring.

How long do plants take to grow in an NFT Hydroponic System?

Growth rates are faster than soil-based methods, with some leafy greens and herbs ready to harvest in as little as 4-6 weeks.

Do NFT Hydroponics Kits come with a warranty?

Many kits include a manufacturer's warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship, offering peace of mind to gardeners.

What is the best way to monitor plant health in an NFT Hydroponic System?

Regularly inspect plants for growth, color, and signs of stress or disease, and adjust the nutrient solution or system settings as needed.

Can Nutrient Film Hydroponic Systems be automated?

Yes, they can be automated with timers for lighting and nutrient pumps, simplifying the maintenance and ensuring consistent nutrient delivery.

How do I choose the right NFT Hydroponics Kit for my space?

Consider the available space, types of plants you wish to grow, and your budget to select a kit that meets your gardening goals.

What kind of support structure is needed for an NFT Hydroponic System?

A sturdy frame or shelving is needed to support the channels and reservoir, often included in the kit or easily constructed.

Are Nutrient Film Hydroponic Systems complicated to set up?

They are designed for easy assembly, with most systems being straightforward to set up, often requiring just a few hours to get started.

What makes an NFT Hydroponics Kit ideal for urban gardening?

Its compact, space-efficient design makes it perfect for balconies, rooftops, or small indoor areas, maximizing urban gardening potential.

How does the nutrient solution in an NFT Hydroponic System get replenished?

The solution is replenished by adding water and nutrients to the reservoir based on plant needs, ensuring a continuous supply.

Can NFT Hydroponics Kits grow root vegetables?

While best suited for leafy greens and herbs, root vegetables can be challenging to grow in NFT systems due to the shallow channels.

What kind of maintenance does an NFT Hydroponic System need?

Maintenance involves monitoring the nutrient solution, cleaning channels to prevent clogs, and ensuring the pump remains in good working order.

Do Nutrient Film Hydroponic Systems require electricity?

They require electricity to run the pump that circulates the nutrient solution, making it essential to have a power source nearby.

Can I expand my NFT Hydroponics Kit as my garden grows?

Many kits are modular, allowing for easy expansion to accommodate more plants or different types of crops as your experience grows.

What is the yield comparison between an NFT Hydroponic System and soil gardening?

NFT systems often yield more per square foot due to optimized conditions and continuous nutrient supply, outperforming traditional soil gardens.

Are Nutrient Film Hydroponic Systems environmentally friendly?

Yes, they use fewer resources and can be run on renewable energy, reducing the carbon footprint of your gardening activities.

Can an NFT Hydroponics Kit be used indoors?

Perfect for indoor use, especially with supplemental grow lights, allowing for year-round gardening regardless of outdoor conditions.

How do I maintain my NFT Hydroponic System?

Regularly check and adjust nutrient solution, clean the system between crops, and monitor plant health to ensure optimal growing conditions.

What is the cost range for an NFT Hydroponics Kit?

Prices vary from affordable starter kits o advanced systems, catering to various levels of hydroponic gardening interest.

Do Nutrient Film Hydroponic Systems save water?

Absolutely, they recirculate water and nutrients, making them highly water-efficient compared to traditional soil-based gardening.

What types of plants are best suited for an NFT Hydroponic System?
