  1. Blake Smith

About four months ago I bought the hydroponic kit to grow lettuce year-round indoors. That system worked so well to start growing strawberries, celery, peppers, and cherry tomatoes. Both fit in a corner of my apartment and have not presented any significant problems so far.

The kits shipped in tightly packed boxes containing the PVC pipes, assembly instructions, a pump, hose, net cups, foam cubes, and a pair of tweezers for handling seedlings. To finish the system for an indoor build I bought a plastic tub, some LED shop lights, and timers for the pump and lights.

I was able to assemble the kits easily. Parts are numbered to show how they fit together. I would caution anyone to work carefully. The pipes would be difficult to replace if they broke. I was surprised that the entire assembly fits together without any glue and holds water without leaking.

I can slide the assembled units across my floor, but I must do so carefully.

I used a hole saw to cut two holes in the plastic tub that I used as a reservoir. One hole is for the drain and the other is where I threaded the pump cord and flexible hose that feeds the system. This pump is on a timer that cycles on and off for a few minutes at a time.

Most of the LED shop lights are hung from the struts that feed water between the pipes. The ones I bought are surprisingly light. The top pair of lights were hung from above. Since the lights I have can be run in series, I could run them on another timer with two plugs.

Once the system is running there is always water in the bottom of the pipes. The small connecting pipes are fitted to the larger pipes with a funnel-shaped connector. Because of this some of the water settles in to the bottom of the pipe when the pump isn’t running.

These systems need some care to keep algae from growing. Light plus nutrient-rich water equals algae. My solution was to throw out the included net cups and foam cubes. Instead I use a black pool noodle which I sliced into one-inch rings and then cut in half. These hold my plants in place and also block the unused slots.

I also use a portion of the pool noodle to connect the outlet pipe to the reservoir. These steps have greatly reduced the algae in my system.

The holes are close together and the pipes are also closely spaced. I found when growing seedlings I could use all of the holes on a level. As my lettuce grew I could only use every other slot. The pipes are farther away from each other, so I plan to use it for larger plants and more mature heads of lettuce.

The systems also don’t have much room for root growth. This hasn’t presented any problems for what I’ve grown so far, but it is something to consider.

Overall, I am overjoyed. These kits removed all of the hard work of finding plans, sourcing materials, and cutting all of the pieces to size. If I hadn’t bought these kits I wouldn’t now be enjoying an endless supply of lettuce and anticipating year-round strawberries.

  2. Aubrey Atkinson

This was so easy for me to set up. I had it up and running in an hour. For me. Being an older lady, this was perfect, as opposed to running around trying to find all those parts and drilling the holes myself. I think this is a good deal for someone like me wanting to try hydroponics. This system is good for smaller plants only, like lettuces, Spinach. Herbs. You will need a bigger set up for larger plants like tomatoes, peppers, however, you might do ok with dwarf varieties. I loved this system so much. I bought another, and plan on adding a few more.

  3. Jamie Taylor

Easy to assemble, actually kinda fun

  4. Lewis Robertson

I am an absolute beginner when it comes to hydroponics. Loved the kit.

    + easy assemble
+ used this to grow lettuce and spinach
    + worked like a charm

    Challenges I faced

    1. You need to get the holes reasonably well aligned and leveled. My garage has a minor slope and I had to find a way to get the system to a level.
    2. Set the system and just run the water through the system. You will see an overflow or a leak if you did not get this right.
    3. I used FoxGarms Grow Big plant food. I teaspoon to a gallon.
    4. Germinating 70 to 100 plants is a bigger challenge. Once to move the sapling to the net cups, the process works on autopilot.
    5. You may need a growlight if you want to put this system in your garage. Growlights will need a toner to switch on for about 8-12 everyday. Your local store has FEIT growlights. Check them out.
    6. If you put this system in the open, remember that sunlight and water is a quite a combination for enabling algae growth. Nothing major. You need to plan to clean the system after a harvest or two.

Enjoy.NFTHydroponics is a great stress buster. This is a great toy to play with. You will love your fresh green.

  5. Erik Wood

Good quality product for the price for a beginner hydroponic system.

  6. Ryan Baker

“Easy to assemble, adequate for growing small plants, can get up and running quickly. The system was easy to assemble without cement or glue using the instructions and diagrams provided. I used a rubber mallet to hammer the pieces together. There were no instructions for hooking up or operating the pump. I ran into a couple of issues with the pump. The pump came packaged in a small box with a couple of plastic connector pieces and the tweezers. I had to use trial and error to figure out how to hook up the rubber hose. One of the plastic pieces is used to connect the hose to the pump. The other plastic piece helps connect the hose to the PVC pipes using the special connector provided. For my first attempt to connect the hose to the PVC pipe, I just loosened the nut and jammed the rubber hose into the hole before re-tightening the nut. The hose fell out of the hose when I started pumping the water. I then removed the nut and washer and slipped it over the rubber hose. I placed the plastic piece inside the hose and pushed it as far as I could onto the PVC connector (past the 2 blue rubber gaskets). I then slid the washer and nut back up the rubber hose to the PVC connector and re-tightened the nut. This method allowed a tight connection with the hose firmly in place. Even with the nut tightened, a drop of water would appear every 4 or 5 seconds between the nut and connector. I didn’t want to tighten it any more since it is made of plastic, but I noticed the small leak would just run down the rubber hose back into the reservoir tank, so it wasn’t an issue. I did have an issue operating the pump. I did not realize there is a twistable adjustment on the bottom of the pump that can be used to adjust the water flow. Initially, the pump setting was turned all the way up, so the pump overwhelmed the system with the water reaching the top of some of the holes and pouring out in a couple of cases. I then turned the pump adjustment down to the lowest setting, and the water pressure seemed adequate to allow the water to flow through the system without the water becoming too deep in the PVC pipes.

In addition to the hydroponic system, I also purchased a 20 gallon Rubbermaid container to use as a reservoir, grow lights with timer, hydroponic fertilizer/nutrients, pH testing/adjusting drops/liquid, rock wool, seeds, pump timer, power strip, and ground fault circuit interrupt (GFCI) adapter. The GFCI adapter is an important safety feature when dealing with water and electricity. The GFCI adapter shuts the electricity off and prevents electric shock if there is a short in the electrical systems running the pump and grow lights. I also bought a wooden pallet and boards to use as a platform to raise the system the needed 6 inches to work with the Rubbermaid reservoir. The wooden pallet only cost a few at the local hardware store.”

  7. Finn Webb

Like it a lot better made than I expected needed to add a 10 gal reservoir

  8. Kayla Walsh

Easy to assemble all the seed I planted started growing in the first 4 day of planting I have the pump on 5 min a day cycle draining in a 5 gallon storage container set it and forgot it. I wood recommend rock wool instead of the sponge it came with they have holes all the way through some seed came out the other side.

  9. Aiden Smith

Pipes must be absolutely perfect and unit has to be level so that the water drains back to the reservoir. Levels are too close together for anything but the smallest plants. We have been able to grow lots of arugula, regular lettuce and bok chow in the short time we have had it. Plants grow 4 to 5 times faster and bigger then soil.

  10. Raylee

Working on the second group of baby plants to grow in it now. Once you get it set up and buy a timer to set the watering mechanism on it runs itself. Have to remember to change and remix water concentrations every 2 weeks.

  11. Aubrey Spencer

First time hydroponic grower. Assembly is very easy and operates great! The directions on installing the water pump are a little vague, required some toying around before I got it. I would recommend getting a timer, since the pump doesn’t have to run constantly and don’t use the sponges, get some rockwool which its perfect in the nets. Overall I am so satisfied I’ll be buying another one soon!

  12. Clara Holland

Love it! Already have lil sprouts out of the sponge! All you need is a one inch drill bit for drilling the tank and presto! you got tiny plants growing themselves! Easy instructions and I found that my seeds were very successful considering I have never done hydroponics before. Love the product.

  13. Chester

This item was as advertised. I have set it up but not put it into long term use but the design is solid. The instructions were easy to follow and the trays for the individual grow spots are nice. It came with a growing medium i was not aware of that i am not a fan of but since i wasnt expecting it to begin with i am 110% satisfied

  14. Glenn Barnes

It’s nice and compact and channels water well. I do wish that it had included a long hose to attach to the drain outlet (to facilitate returning water to a storage tank.

  15. Elizabeth

This is a great system to start your seeds for your garden in the winter and transplant them. Comes with everything you need.

  16. Lydia

This is very easy to use and it works wonderfully. My 12 year old put it together, as it was purchased for a project she was doing for school, but she did have a little trouble putting it together. My husband easily helped her fix what she did incorrectly and it was done in about 30 minutes.

  17. Emerson Gray

Growing seeds as we speak. Easy to use

  18. Alex

I love this unit! I might just buy another one! Im growing so much lettuce!

  19. Sofia Jackson

Great product, but keep in mind it is just PVC. Anyone at home could do this, but I don’t have the time (and neither do you). Therefore, buy this, simply put it together, and you are all set!

  20. Jaime Adams

Amazing product easy to assemble! It’s worth your money!

  21. Clarke

    Growing your own salad.

  22. Shay Hart

After 4 months it works as well as day one. No leaks, and the water pump motor is great. Quite a bang for your buck!

  23. Robin May

This is a great product at an extremely good value! It arrived on time, was quick and easy to set up, and runs perfectly fine with the pump provided in the package.

  24. Eli Grant

It is working fantastic for my cucumbers and tomatoes!!!

  25. Brynn Hart

Easy setup and Easy to use, it’s great for Sprouting seeds and Growing Edible greens.

  26. Mell Mason

I’ve purchased a few of these (in different configurations), and they all go together easily, and they don’t leak. They work well for smaller plants, particularly smaller lettuce and herbs. I haven’t used it indoors, but given it’s size and the fact that it doesn’t leak, I think it would work well. The pump is small, but seems to get the job done.

I threw the planting sponges away as soon as I opened the box and used 1″ rockwool to start the plants. Would definitely recommend!

  27. Cameron Russell

Easy to assemble, actually kinda fun

  28. Iris Cook

I LOVE this system. I am in my second week of use outside in my backyard growing pea shoots, Pak Choi, spinach and lettuce and have populated 2/3 of the system. The system went together perfectly with absolutely NO leaks and using the pump provided. I added an 18 gallon reservoir for water and nutrients which at the moment contains only about 5 gallons of solution. I also installed a shade to protect against too hot sun here for baby seedlings. It is my intention to purchase a second system soon. I will use these in two ways: 1) as a “nursery” to give seedlings a quick start root building system before transplanting to my soil 2) I will use it as a typical stand-alone hydroponic system growing the lettuce and spinach to maturity.
I say simply lift each of the grow cups once in a while to check the root ball size. If they are getting too large, simply trim the roots with a pair of scissors to an appropriate size and drop them back into the system. Additionally, simply spread larger sizes plants out to use only every other grow hole. And don’t forget to HARVEST AND EAT! LOL! I am a highly experienced 76 year old Gardner and I have used MANY other methods including open ground, raised beds, large containers, and more. This is my all time favourite and the system I have been hoping for due to ease of planting and maintenance, cleanliness, portability if relocating is necessary, pest control, fast grow time to maturity and ability to turn the individual cups so each side of each plant gets the same sun exposure. Very affordable and easy for home gardening! PS. Am using both the supplied sponges and tiny rock wool plugs. Both working well.

It’s my first week using this but so far so good. I love it actually and they include sponges for the seeds too!
